Wedding planning in Essex can feel overwhelming. With so many decisions to make and details to remember, where do you even begin?
With a clear plan, checklist and timeline of tasks, you can ditch the stress and make it the exciting, fun process it should be. Stay on track, remember the important details and plan out your dream day in Essex with our month-by-month wedding planning timeline.
12 Months Before: Budget, Guest List and Venue
You might want to jump straight into all the little details but the first thing to do is focus on is the big picture.
When you imagine your dream day, what do you see? Are you celebrating in an ornate manor house or a rustic barn setting? Is your ceremony out in a stunning, secluded garden or in a stately drawing room? As a couple, set out the grand vision for your big day together. This will inform which venues you look at and the time of year you choose.
At the same time, you’ll need to work out your budget. It’s not the most glamorous of tasks, but it’s vital to make sure you’re allocating enough for all of those unnegotiable elements. This will also give you a rough idea of how many guests you’ll have for the day and the evening.
Once this is done, you can really get things underway. The first big decision is to choose your wedding venue. This is likely to be the biggest part of your budget, so make sure you visit several venues and book your absolute favourite. Your venue will decide your wedding date, guest limit, accommodation and supplier timeline.
With the venue decided, you’ll be able to complete the guest list and start sending your Save The Dates.
9 Months Before: Registrar, Ceremony and Key Suppliers
Now that your dream venue is booked and your wedding date is firmly in the diary, it’s time to start the search for your main suppliers.
But first, some legal admin. You and your partner will need to visit your local council office to give notice of your intention to marry. This means booking an appointment with a registrar to share details about yourselves and your wedding date. The notice must be complete at least 29 days before the ceremony and lasts for a year, but it’s always worth getting this done nice and early. This also means you can book a registrar for your ceremony - a crucial step that makes your wedding legally binding.
With the registrar confirmed, you’ll want to start booking all the amazing suppliers that will help make your day magical. Start the search for caterers, photographers, musicians & entertainment, hair & make up and florists. Meet your vendors in person to make sure they fit your vibe and are willing to work with you to bring your vision to life.
This is also a good time to assign your wedding party roles, so that your friends and family can help with the search!
Oh, and now is definitely the time to begin dress hunting. This is especially important if you're getting a made-to-measure dress that can take six months to deliver.
6 Months Before: Food, Drink and Guest Details
Around the six-month mark, it’s time to start thinking about logistics and secondary suppliers. From your cake supplier to your transport to your overnight accommodation, there are still many decisions to be made.
With your wedding dress decided, it’s time to make sure everyone else is suited and booted. Getting groomswear and wedding party outfits now may seem early, but it saves stress closer to the time. Don’t forget about the pageboys and flowergirls too!
Now’s the time to book a menu tasting with your caterer. Your wedding package may already come with a menu tasting experience, but most caterers will also offer a menu tasting.
This is also the moment to design and send out your wedding invites with a link to your wedding website. This should have all the details your guests will need for an incredible day. Share details on the venue, menu choices, local accommodation options, and allow guests to share dietary requirements.
3 Months Before: Rings, RSVPs and Running Order
Now that we’re really getting into the countdown to the big day, it’s time to bring it all together into a smooth day plan.
Suppliers will likely want full payment around this time so use this as a moment to check in. Create a schedule to send to your vendors and discuss when they can arrive to set up and other timings.
Who’s going to be making speeches? Time to start writing… Make sure everyone in the wedding party knows who will be standing up to toast and in which order. This is also a good point to chase outstanding RSVPs and design the seating plan.
Don’t worry, there’s also some fun tasks to do! Get shopping for (or making) your wedding rings, finish off buying your decor details and don’t forget any wedding signage to guide everyone to the right place. Oh, and go on your hen and stag dos - much needed after all that planning and organising.
1 Month Before: Final Checks and Wedding Week
With only one month to go, this final stage should be more about confirming and tweaking details than anything else.
Check in with your wedding coordinator or venue to go through the wedding ceremony schedule and confirm guest numbers. Catch up with your caterers with final menu orders, the seating plan and any dietary requirements. Discuss any desired shots or particular moments to be captured with your photographer and share the timings of the day with them.
Run through your wedding checklist to make sure all the ceremony paperwork is complete, and everyone in the wedding party knows their roles and responsibilities. With this in mind, this is a good time to buy thank you gifts for everyone who has been there for you as you’ve been planning your big day.
Oh, and make sure you’ve written your vows - not something to leave to the last minute.
